Apple iPhone is regarded as the must have gadget by many gadget freaks. With the features of iPod and phone one would get the world into their hands! Apple iphone users are normally restricted to use only the networks prescribed by the iphones. One needn’t worry anymore as there is a way to bring your favorite network on your phone! Jail breaking is the technique, where the iphone is modified to be used with any other network. This would ensure that you can use any desired network of your choice. In this method, a code is run and this would overcome the distribution rights of the apple company. Although jail break is not legal, it is considered a good option by many fans as it would allow you to download applications from unauthorized dealers like Cydia, Icy etc. Cydia is the most popular brand and one could find lots of paid apps in Rock App. There are also applications that are not officially supported by the developers. One would be able to download applications from apple in a jail broken website also.

People who like iphone applications would have more reasons to like the jail broken version! There are many interesting applications available with the apple iphone. One would be able to bookmark all their favorite applications. This would ensure that they navigate through their phone easily. Bookmarking is another favorite application from Infinidock and one could easily load this application in their jail broken application. It is in fact very difficult to get good applications in the original apple iphone. One would be able to get lots of varieties of applications in their jail broken version. There is also other interesting application that could be added in your phone without cluttering the interface! The applications that are chosen are arranged horizontally on the screen. Users may choose the applications that must be visible in the first screen. The rest of the applications can simply be accessed by scrolling the screen. In a jail broken iphone, an entire customization is possible which would ensure that your iphone experience is increased a lot! You would be able to add so many applications as you wish and the dock size would simply increase based on the number of applications you add. One would also be able to get their bugs corrected. It is possible to send error via email. These applications are very cheap and one could get it even at $0.99!

Use Bluetooth Keyboard With Your iPhone

Posted under Accesories, Applications, Downloads by Kris on Saturday 26 December 2009 at 1:06 pm

Well, here is a Christmas gift for all you iPhone lovers out there. Remember the time when you wished that your iphone could support your bluetooth keyboard? Well, Santa granted your wish (kind of :P)

A new app is out which will enable you to use bluetooth keyboards with your iphone. And guess what jailbreakers? This app only works on a jailbroken iphone :D and your ipod touch too (Not yet tested with an iPhone2g)

The only limitation of the app is that the input method only works from inside the app. This means that you will have to copy paste the text in any other app, you cannot directly enter text in another app. But, no worries, its much faster than your standard iphone type speed.

Okay, enough of riff raff, here is how you proceed :-

  1. Download the bluetooth keyboard driver available in Cydia *Click Me*
  2. Start Keyboard Demo
  3. Make your bluetooth keyboard discoverable (read your Keyboard Manual)
  4. Select keyboard in device list
  5. You will get a PIN code alert, enter this PIN in your keyboard.
  6. TADA! You are now connected and you can enter text into the provided text field from your keyboard.

Thanks to ringwald for developing this awesome app.

Please share your experiences with this app through comments and let us know if you run into any trouble.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all readers out there. ;)

iPhone 3GS jailbreak available; Geohot releases “purplera1n”

Posted under Accesories, Applications, Latest News, Personal, iPhone articles by aaSma on Sunday 5 July 2009 at 1:47 pm

George Hotz, who is perhaps a little better known as Geohot has offered his response to the Dev Team’s decision to wait until iPhone OS 3.1 is available before releasing a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS and it has come in the form of his own jailbreaking tool.

“Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.”

That’s right, he has released a tool by the name of “purplera1n” and it will allow anyone to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS running OS 3.0.

All things considered, the process seems pretty simple.

“To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you’ll figure out what to do from there.”

Of course, he was kind enough to point out that this is still a beta and that you should backup everything before you begin. As of now purplera1n is only available for Windows (except Windows 7), however according to a recent message on Twitter it looks like we may be seeing a Windows 7 and OS X version as early as next week.

“i’m going to sleep…partying this weekend…maybe monday for os x and win 7?

Unfortunately, it looks like I am going to have to wait to test this out. I am running OS X on my iMac and my only Windows option is on my Eee PC, which happens to be Windows 7 and while I miss my jailbroken iPhone it is not worth the time of a Windows XP installation.

That said, I would love to hear from anyone who is able and willing.

[UPDATE] It looks like we have an updated version of purplera1n to play with. Coming from a recent post over at iphonejtag the new version adds and improves support for Windows Vista, Windows 7, International and 64-bit. of course, the new version is still beta, but with Windows 7 that means I can now play. Hopefully all goes well.

iPhone overtaking Nokia in mobile ads

Posted under Competitors, Latest News by aaSma on Sunday 5 July 2009 at 1:35 pm
Nokia has lost its overall market share leadership in the worldwide smartphone segment to Apple in mobile ads share, BNET Technology reports. According to statistics from AdMob, Apple’s iPhone received 49 percent of ad traffic in May, compared with 32 percent for Nokia.

Why is mobile ad share important? Because in the smartphone segment, the tail wags the dog — apps drive customer loyalty more than hardware features… Yes, Apple offers many more apps, and yes, it’s more geared to consumers than Nokia.

Nokia already realized about the power of mobile applications and contents.

iPhone Info : Security

Posted under Downloads by aaSma on Friday 26 June 2009 at 6:31 pm

iPhone supports some basic security mechanisms, including SSL; mail authentication methods and VPN’s, as well as WPA and WPA2 for WiFi access.

iPhone has a passcode lock feature. When enabled, you must enter a four-digit code every time you wake iPhone from standby. It also prevents transferring photos to your PC or Mac; you must disable the passcode lock to transfer photos.

We don’t know how robust the passcode lock is, though, and it is generally not good practice to store very sensitive information on mobile phones, PDA’s or laptops without encryption. We recommend not storing anything sensitive on your iPhone for now, passcode or not.

Another open question is whether iPhone can be reset by iTunes to bypass the passcode lock, yet remain activated for service by AT&T. If so, this would enable anyone to crack an iPhone and use it as a phone and Internet device, though perhaps without retrieving your personal information.

iPhone supports L2TP and PPTP VPN’s (virtual private networks), but we didn’t have a VPN set up for testing, so we don’t know how well this works.

Easy Tips to View YouTube on Apple iPhone 3G

Posted under Applications, Personal, Videos, iPhone articles by aaSma on Friday 26 June 2009 at 6:26 pm

You will find many applications developed by iPhone mobile application development companies, but there are rare video player apps for the iPhone, thanks to the default iPhone player that is loaded with many features, including watching videos via YouTube. With iPhone, you can also watch YouTube videos with a slight tap of your finger. You don’t need to download anything, just search for your favorite videos in the similar way you would have searched it on your desktop and watch without any hassles. Here’s how you watch your YouTube videos on your iPhone: How to Search YouTube Videos?

  • The iPhone’s Home screen will have a YouTube icon; just tap on the icon to open it.
  • Invoke the search field by tapping on Search located at the bottom of the screen
  • To type any search term you need to bring up the virtual keyboard. A slight tap on the search field will open the keyboard. Key in your search term and then hit the search button to view the video library.
  • You will see a vast variety of YouTube videos below your search field. You will just have to tap on a video icon to watch it, but make sure to tilt the iPhone horizontally since videos can be viewed better in wide mode.
  • When viewing the video you can tweak the video configurations through YouTube’s standard video controls. These controls include pause button, volume button and the share button, which allows you to mail any YouTube video URL to a friend.
  • There is also an additional “Bookmarks” button on the controls. By tapping on it, you can save your favorite ones by bookmarking them and view them later on.

You may not find many video apps from an iPhone applications development expert, however there are some that are trying to compete with the default Apple iPhone player. Some have even released their own player versions. We hope the future holds more such iPhone open application development projects.

iStubz; a super-short iPhone/iPod charging cable that helps reduce cable clutter, tripping hazards

Posted under Accesories, Firmware, Latest News, iPhone articles by aaSma on Friday 19 June 2009 at 1:19 pm

Whether they are hanging behind your desk, on the floor, or in your gear bag — cable clutter is a terrible thing. That said, there are times when a super-short iPhone (or iPod) charging cable would be a nice thing to have. Enter the iStubz from CableJive — a charging/sync cable that works with the iPhone

or an iPod and is either 7cm (2.75-inches) or 22cm (8.66-inches) long.

If nothing else, these seem like they would be a nice cable to have when you are working in a place where a long cable may cause a tripping hazard such as a coffee shop. I would be able to charge my iPhone and have one less cable hanging off the side of the never large enough table.

Additionally, the iStubz cables are available in either black or white, so you will be able to get one that matches your iPhone, just in case that sort of thing is important to you. The 7cm cable sells for $7.95, and the 22cm cable sells for $8.95.

Yet another, also much easier method to activate Internet tethering on iPhone OS 3.0

Posted under Applications, Personal, iPhone articles, tricks by aaSma on Friday 19 June 2009 at 1:05 pm

Enabling Internet tethering on your OS 3.0 running iPhone has just been made even easier. Now instead of downloading and updating your iPhone, you can set your self up by simply visiting a website and making a few clicks.

In order to use this simpler method, just grab your iPhone, launch Mobile Safari and surf on over to http://help.benm.at/help.php.

Once there, it is just a matter of making those few clicks. Basically, just click on Mobileconfigs, then choose your country and carrier and you should be all set.

Again, this comes with a warning that you may get into trouble with your carrier, not to mention it has also been noted as negatively affecting visual voicemail by some users. That said, have fun and enjoy being able to tether you connection.

mophie Juice Pack air now available for order

Posted under Accesories, Latest News, Personal, iPhone articles by aaSma on Friday 19 June 2009 at 12:56 pm

The Juice

Pack air for the iPhone 3G was expected to be available on April 21 and sure enough its currently on the front page of the mophie website

for order.

The Juice Pack air still offers the extended battery option similar to the Juice Pack 3G, however it does have some additional features that are worth mentioning. To begin with, the major change is the fact that the Juice Pack air is a form-fitting hard-shell case, as opposed to just a slip on external battery. As far as extra power, the Juice Pack air has a 1200mAh battery that will give you “up to” an additional 270 hours on standby, 4.5 hours of 3G talk time, 9 hours of 2G talk time, 4.5 hours of 3G Internet use, 5.4 hours of Wi-Fi Internet use, 20 hours of audio playback and 6 hours of video playback.

Another feature of the Juice Pack air is the introduction on an on/off switch that will let you keep your iPhone in the case and still decide which power source to use. Additionally, the Juice Pack air also has the pass though USB port that will allow you to simultaneously charge your air and your iPhone along with the 4 LED charge status indicator on the back.

The Juice Pack air is available in either black, white or purple and is selling for $79.95. While the juice pack air is available for order, I should point out that it is not expected to begin shipping for one week, of course, it may be good to get your order in early.
